FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs 1

Identifying your child's needs can often be confusing or challenging. However, our team at HOPE is committed to providing your child with the support they need to overcome hurdles and achieve the goals we set for them.

Taking a look at some questions many parents tend to ask may help you in understanding how your child is developing and if there are any additional steps you must take.

  • Will teaching my child sign language prevent him from talking? Will it help with his communication?
Signing stimulates speech as the use of hands and fingers stimulates the Broca’s area, in the brain, which is responsible for speech. It is essential that signs be used along with speech. Always say the words when signing. Teaching the child gestures that are commonly understood by all is an important to aid communication. Signs that are not commonly understood can increase frustration and is counterproductive and should be avoided.
  • Is it good to teach my child how to speak using flash cards at a table?
Speech is the ability to talk. Language is the ability to understand and use words meaningfully. Language needs to be imparted in a meaningful manner so that the child’s understanding is generalised. Tabletop teaching alone can result in language skills that are only need-based and prompt dependent.
  • My child is 2.6 years old and is still not speaking. Does he have autism?
Sometimes children start talking late. If all other responses are fine (eye contact, non-verbal and gestural communication, understanding, and social responses) then you can wait until around 3 years to have them diagnosed. If you find that your child does not understand and respond to what you say you must consult with a developmental paediatrician or psychologist.
  • My child is 2 years old. Why should I consider him not talking to be a problem? This may be his personality.
Considering the rapid increase in the number of children with autism and communication problems, it is advisable that you consult an expert if you are in doubt.
  • My child looks at me and smiles. He enjoys being around us and other children but does not like to talk or respond. Does he have autism?
Autism is a wide spectrum and even children with language and language-related responsiveness could fall within the spectrum. It is always better to get an assessment or start an intervention immediately.
  • Why is it important for my child to play with toys?
Play is a child’s way of learning. It facilitates motor, language, emotional, and social skills. If a child is not playing, it points to impairments in these areas.
